loqoriceMost Dutch people like 'drop', a special type of licorice, that is but seldom appreciated by foreigners to our country. 'Drop" is made of the roots of a type of licorice - Glycyrrhiza glabra - salmiac and sugar. In the past arabic gum was used for binding but nowadays mostly modified starch is used. Most of the typical flavor of 'drop' comes from the licorice root. This is also a traditional medicine for use on throat and coughing. Recently there were warnings of a possible risk of high blood tension as a by-effect of the salts. Licorice is eaten in some N.European countries but not very often. In the rest of the world it is almost unknown. Chinese persons often dislike it as the combination of herbs and sweets is unknown to them. A matter of custom! Many Dutch, living in other countries, appear to badly miss the flavour of 'drop'.
